Warning! New OS X Software Update!

Apple has issued an update to Mac OS X Lion to version 10.7.3!

Unfortunately, quite a few people are having problems with the update. Some of these people — a couple of whom are clients of mine — neglected to do a very important step before updating; Using Disk Utility to Verify Disk and Repair Permissions. As it should happen, I had an emergency call to assist a client show attempted to update via Software Update. The download proceeded properly, however, the install failed. Twice! A download of the combo updater and subsequent install also failed.

Subsequent investigation through the use of Applejack (previously installed) should multiple bad nodes, missing files and more. Using Applejack, the OS was able to repair most of itself, leaving only a few ‘missing file attribute’ errors that could not be corrected.

A new install of the OS X 10.7.3 Combo Update has apparently fixed the problem. However, due to lack of time because of situational strictures, I was not able to run further repair evaluations after the install. For those of you doing your own install, run Disk Utility’s Verify/Repair Disk and Repair Disk Permissions before AND after the install.

I hope this blog entry will aid some of you to prevent a hair-pulling experience.
